absolutely zero relation between italian portamento and french porte-manteau
So this is actually quite interesting from an etymological standpoint!
Portamento is the way someone carries themselves in Italian
“Portamento Della Voce” (Carriage of the Voice) is a musical term that is just usually shortened to Portamento.
Porte-Manteu, in it’s original french, is basically just Cloak Carrier, from Porte (Carry, which *does* actually come from the same romantic etymological roots as Portamento!) And Manteu (Cloak). This happens to be the word used for what we call Coat Hanger!
This then got moved into English into the word Portmanteau, which is just used as a short hand to describe fusion of words, like the original Porte-Manteu is!
So, in fact, they *are* related in meaning, both relate to carrying things, just in much different contexts.
